Does the Bible really teach that Jesus is the only way to God?
That’s a good question. Our culture is definitely headed in the direction of pluralism and relativism.
For example, 6 out of 10 teenagers today agree with the statement “many religions can lead to eternal life; there is no one true religion.” Prominent religious leaders like the Dalai Lama agree when he says, “the essential message of all religions is very much the same.”
There are different parts of this question worth looking at and responding to, but I want to focus on what the Bible says. Because if the Bible teaches that Jesus is the only way to God, then it doesn’t matter what our increasingly secular thinks.
It turns out that Jesus—the founder of Christianity—couldn’t be clearer:
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”—John 14:6
Luke reminds us that, “there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”—Acts 4:12
And Paul clarifies, “For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus…”—1 Timothy 2:5
The truth that Jesus is the only way to God has never been popular. So we don’t need to change our theology because it’s out of step with what people feel should be the case.
But to be clear, this doesn’t mean that Christians are better than everyone else. Like a social club where we pick who’s in and who’s out. It means that Jesus is claiming to be the only solution to our fundamental problem—sin.
